A few years ago I saw a small and charming foreign film about cooking called Mostly Martha, written and directed by Sandra Nettelbeck. I wasn't familiar with any of the lead actors and had no expectations going in but I was very pleasantly surprised by this film for it had warmth, charm and drama to compliment it's mostly saccharine and comedic American trailer. It was one of my favorites of all the films I saw that year.

Five years later, I'm a bit surprised to see Hollywood has decided to remake the flim, injecting A list star power and crafting an equally if not more overpoweringly saccharine trailer to promote the film. I can only question -- why? I was fooled by the trailer for Mostly Martha because the film was so much more than its American trailer made it to be, but for the Hollywood remake, I don't have high hopes.

Smart Comedy

Oxymoron? In most cases for comedy these days yes, but not when it comes to HOT FUZZ. So far Pegg and Wright can do no wrong. I was not a big fan of spoof films (ESPECIALLY zombie spoofs) until I saw Shaun of the Dead which made me realize that comedy and action (and in this case horror too) can go together. I was thorougly entertained and laughed a lot during the film; it was even funnier than 300. It has a very sharp script, creative camerawork, excellent editing, great actors and Wright is not afraid to push the gore along with everything else but selectively so as to not make it tiring. There is a section in the finale that made me howl, but I won't reveal it yet. Comic brilliance. See it.

A panel for today. This is Lilith from the prologue of the book. There were a lot of positive comments regarding the introduction to the Amazons at the beginning of Rose and Isabel, and I would like to do another round of those (this time including R&I themselves in the role call). The Lilith intro is currently superceding that and I'm looking for a way to use them both.

I have about 5 introductory segments that come before Cora's story gets rolling, so it becomes a matter of how to sequence them, so they are integrated with each other and feel cohesive. Time to look for some films that do this effectively and study them...

No, I'm not going to start reporting Survivor upates -- my two blogs (R&I and Current Flavor) are merging into one. I've wanted to do this for a while now but was afraid of creating a cacophany of jumbled themes and ideas. With the labels feature in the new beta blogger, I think I'll be able to make some sense of things. The classic template that I'm using doesn't allow labels to be placed as a list in the sidebar (??), but if you click the label at the bottom of a post it will take you to all the posts with that label. Current Flavor posts will be moved over, labeled, and placed in their appropriate place chronologically. Unfortunately the entries will lose all the great comments folks have posted since there is no way to migrate comments. I'll be posting a link to the comments at the bottom of each post.

Cooking terminology for falling behind, which is what's happening with the Cora book. Things have gotten very busy at the studio and I just haven't been able to muster the energy to put in after work hours on Cora that I've been doing so diligently until this point.
That combined with a mixup of information at Flickr (now you have to have a Yahoo account also) where I can't link my old Flikr account to the new Yahoo account has kept me from posting as well. Arg.

Hopefully I'll have some new stuff to show soon.

In other news, Derek Thompson and I have teamed up for battle at Fist-a-Cuffs. Swing on by and vote for us! (the team is called Beauty Pageant).
