Trees n things

At the moment I'm 52 pages into Part 2 of Rose and Isabel, and getting into a nice stride. I'm making small discoveries on a daily basis that help me simplify and improve the book. Photoshop's lasso tool has become my new best friend. Late in the process on Part one, I started using it to "cut out" the highlight shapes in Rose's hair, and currently I'm using it to "draw" large sections of the book, mostly where there's trees and foliage, clouds, or patterned areas. I've been drawing selections with the lasso, which can make sharp points and angles that I couldn't hope to draw with the brush. These shapes are usually filled with solid black and detailled slightly with the brush. Rose's hair is now being done solely with the lasso and paint bucket. I'm excited because it saves time, looks cleaner than the brush and I can get better shapes with it.

Here's an example from one of the latest pages.

UPDATE: (Thursday 01/19)

Here's the evolution of the page...layout (pencil on paper), rough (Cintiq) and cleanup with balloon placement (cintiq).
I don't really spend a ton of time on the layouts, they're more for just getting the general idea on the page and for character placement. The rough below is actually composed of two panels that used to be on different pages that I cut apart and recomposed in Photshop.(I was condensing three pages down to two).

Looking great - This blog is on my bookmarks list because it's great to follow along with the process of making a comic book (or graphic novel, if that's what you call it).

It's also kind of inspirational, to see somebody who's got a fulltime job actually getting personal projects DONE... it's a constant reminder that it IS possible, so thanks for that.

Frickin' great.

It's cool to see it without the balloons. They outta make an "instrumental" version of a comic for those who want to see it without dialogue.

I can't wait for this book! Part one was hands down the best comic I read all summer!
Seeing you break down your process like this is priceless. I'm just now learning photoshop, and I have yet to recieve instruction as clear and as valuable as this. Thank you!

Wow...fantastic! Can't wait to see this completed... BTW, do you use digital clean up?

Thanks Don -- yep the clean up and paint is all digital. About halfway through the book I switched to all digital pages -- to create layouts faster and with more flexibility.

Thanks for stopping by!
